  10. The existence of an exclusive hideaway for the country’s movers and shakers where secret deals were done in private luxury first exploded into
the public eye back in 2007.

Back then, the fact that Qantas spent hundreds of thousands of
dollars wining and dining the nation’s political elite in ultra-exclusive VIP lounges was relatively unknown.

It was a time before Alan Joyce’s tenure as the CEO of
Qantas had even started, when he was boss of the comparatively lowly budget airline,
    Jetstar.

And unlike Anthony Albanese’s current slide in the polls leading up to an election in next year, the prospects back in 2007 were rosy for Labor.

The election that was looming was the ‘Kevin 07’ landslide that would see Kevin Rudd become prime minister and John Howard
    lose his own seat.

The issue which blew open the ‘guilty secret’ of the Chairman’s Lounge then wasn’t
about a prime minister’s privileges, although John Howard
and Kevin Rudd were certainly both members during
    their terms as PM.

But when broadcaster Steve Price – himself a long time
Chairman’s Lounge member – revealed a politically charged remark made within the club’s hallowed walls,
the cat was out of the bag.

The political revelation – a comment by ex-rock star turned senator Peter Garrett that
Labor would change the policies it campaigned on if it won government – did not deter his party from romping in on election day.

In contrast, the scandal currently engulfing Anthony Albanese about his Chairman’s Lounge membership and that of his ex-wife Carmel Tebbutt, and their son Nathan could bring down the prime minister.

The exclusive Qantas Chairman’s Lounge (above) has been a
well-kept secret for years, but it exploded into the public conscience in 2007 as the result of a political furore

Broadcaster Steve Price revealed he had been a Chairman’s Lounge
member since 2002 during a row before the 2007 election won by Kevin Rudd which let the cat out of the bag about the VIP club

The existence of the lounge was so little known back in 2007 that in defending his disclosure
of Garrett’s remark, Steve Price had to explain what the private enclave actually was.

In a first person piece he wrote: ‘The Chairman’s Lounge is a separate
frequent flyers lounge away from the crowded normal Qantas Club.

‘As its name implies, the people given access to it are approved by the Qantas chairman, Margaret Jackson.

    ‘I have been a Chairman’s Lounge member since 2002.’

In his opinion piece, Price also revealed TV entertainment reporter Richard Wilkins was also a
    member of lounge.

Wilkins had also been inside at the time and was his only witness to the remark Price said Garrett had made.

Other prominent media figures, such as 60 Minutes
reporters, actors and performers, and well-known writers
and sports people are said to be among the lounge’s exclusive membership of
    around 6000.

Price went on to defend himself for reporting what some claimed was a
confidential conversation in a private place, but
which exposed him to criticism over his own membership for allegedly promoting Qantas on his radio
    show.

Back in 2007, Alan Joyce (left) was boss of the comparatively lowly budget airline Jetstar, and then Qantas CEO Geoff Dixon (right)
had the power over who made the cut to the Chairman’s Lounge

One observer has described the relationship bet6ween leading politicians
such as PM Anthony Albanese and the former Qantas CEO
Alan Joyce (above) as ‘alarmingly cosy’

‘Why on earth is Qantas giving a controversial shock jock membership of its Chairman’s Lounge,
which is supposedly to enable our elite politicians and business leaders some privacy from the hoi polloi?’ demanded Crikey reporter Stephen Mayne at the time.

‘The Chairman’s Lounge is meant to be all about discretion and confidentiality,’ he said, accusing Price of breaking ‘a confidence’.

The following year, before he was succeeded as Qantas CEO by
Alan Joyce, Geoff Dixon was the sole gatekeeper of entry
    into the club’s hushed confines.

Qantas Chairman’s Lounge membership was ‘so exclusive that you have to be
personally invited by the airline’s chieftain’, Nine
    newspapers reported in 2008.

‘A marvellous benefit of lounge membership is that the mega rich and powerful avoid
having to mingle with the riffraff who will
    be travelling cattle class.

‘Having said that, members of the ultra-exclusive club have included Pauline Hanson.

‘Another lounge member is Brad Cooper, who is currently enjoying a prolonged exposure to cattle-class in Kirkconnell Correctional Centre.’ (Cooper was the former HIH insurance executive jailed for eight years on fraud and bribery offences).

Membership of the elite lounge is confined to about 6000 Australians including politicians from both sides, senior
public servants, TV stars and actors

The ‘scandal’ currently engulfing Anthony Albanese about his Chairman’s Lounge membership and that of his ex-wife
Carmel Tebbutt, and their son Nathan could bring down the prime
minister (above the PM with partner Jodie Haydon and ex-Qantas CEO Alan Joyce)

The report noted that politicians declaring membership
of the lounge ‘which most of their spouses got too’ in their pecuniary interests that year included
Liberal MPs of the day, Philip Ruddock, Bob Baldwin and Andrew Southcott.

Labor MPs with lounge privileges included
Tanya Plibersek, Bob McMullan, and Sharon Grierson, and Martin Ferguson declared a
bottle of Grange hermitage as a gift from Qantas, as did Liberal, Christopher Pyne.

Asked if all MPs got the captain’s pick from Geoff Dixon, the airline’s spokesperson  told Nine: ‘We like
to retain a bit of mystery. Membership is by invitation only and it is reviewed periodically.’

Fast forward to today, and nearly every single federal politician in the country has accepted free membership of
the controversial, invitation-only lounge with one even describing it as an ‘entitlement’.

Qantas and the Albanese government recently denied the ‘very, very high-end perk’ gives the airline a disproportionate level of influence over the country’s politicians.

They were commenting ahead of the launch of the new book The Chairman’s Lounge
by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston, which has
    stirred up the controversy.

A Daily Mail Australia audit of the members’ interest registers – in both Federal Parliament’s House
of Representatives and the Senate – revealed almost 93 per cent of the nation’s leaders have been ‘gifted’ membership to the
    lavish, all-inclusive lounge.

Mr Albanese has defended himself by saying he
declared all his benefits in pecuniary interest statements.

At a press conference this week, he repeated that all of
his upgrades ‘have been declared as appropriate. What’s appropriate is transparency.’

Apart from the PM, members include every one of his 22-person Cabinet,
his seven-person Outer Ministry and all 12 assistant ministers.

PM Anthony Albanese and every member of his 22-person Cabinet, his seven-person Outer Ministry and all 12 assistant ministers
are members of the exclusive Chairman’s Lounge

Entry to the country’s six opulent VIP clubs are suitably discreet, but once inside, the designer lounges offer free à la carte fine
dining, table service and a discreet army of dedicated
    lounge attendants

On the Coalition side of parliament, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton, deputy leader David Littleproud and former deputy Barnaby Joyce are also among the
swathes of politicians who have disclosed they have taken up free membership to the contentious
    club.

Bill Shorten is a member, Tanya Plibersek is still a member and so is Teal MP, Zali Steggall.

Last year it was reported that Australian Competition and Consumer Commission chairwoman Gina
Cass-Gottlieb and Australian Securities and Investments Commission chairman Joe Longo and some
of their deputies are members of the Chairman’s Lounge despite regulating the airline.

Senior public servants in the club included Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet secretary Glyn Davis, deputy secretaries Nadine
Williams, Liz Hefren-Webb, Rachel Bacon and ambassador
    to Beijing, Scott Dewar.

Other Qantas freebies bestowed on members include numerous business class flight upgrades,
model Qantas aircrafts, frequent flyer points, and tickets to sporting and
    entertainment events.

Touted as ‘the most exclusive club in the country’, membership to the Chairman’s Lounge is still veiled in secrecy.

The new book The Chairman’s Lounge by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston (above) has stirred up the controversy

Australian Competition and Consumer Commission chairwoman Gina Cass-Gottlieb and Australian Securities and Investments Commission chairman Joe Longo are
    members despite regulating the airline

Even the entrances to each of the country’s six opulent VIP clubs –
    in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide,
Canberra and Perth airports – are suitably discreet.

Once inside, however, the designer lounges are noticeably
luxurious, with free à la carte fine dining, table service, a decadent selection of wines and Champagne and a discreet army of dedicated lounge attendants.

Virgin Airlines has its own version of the VIP enclave,
    the ‘Beyond’ lounge.

Only a handful of federal politicians have relinquished their membership to the Qantas Chairman’s Lounge in the wake of the furore.

The select few to take a principled stand on the issue include South Australian senator Barbara Pocock and former Wallabies star
turned ACT senator David Pocock, along with MPs Stephen Bates, Queensland Green Elizabeth Watson-Brown, and Monique Ryan,
    a Teal from Victoria.

Geoffrey Watson SC, a former counsel assisting
the Independent Commission Against Corruption and
a director of the Centre for Public Integrity, has implored all politicians and policymakers to follow suit.

‘There are certain positions in life where
you cannot take Chairman’s Club membership,’ he said.

‘You’re taking public money for the job and you are supposed
to represent the public. Why not sit with them while you’re
    waiting for a plane?’

    QantasAnthony Albanese

  11. Joe Aston got the kind of book launch every
first time author dreams of – massive amounts of free publicity online, in newspapers and on TV and radio.

And it was all thanks to Anthony Albanese’s ill-informed attack on Aston over what was written in his book, The Chairman’s Lounge – The Inside
Story of how Qantas sold us out.

Despite the resultant terrible publicity – which
has led to him being called ‘upgrade Albo’ – and calls for an inquiry, Aston told Daily Mail Australia his
book is ‘not a hit job on Anthony Albanese’.

Aston insisted he’s ‘not trying to get a scalp’, but reiterated that the
Prime Minister ‘had a direct line to Alan Joyce’.

The book claims Mr Albanese got 22 upgrades from economy on Qantas flights
by personally requesting them from the airline’s then CEO Mr Joyce – which the Prime Minister has
    categorically denied.

According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’, 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese got upgrades for were ‘privately
funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu.

But instead of addressing the claim, Mr Albanese chose to shoot
the messenger and, in turn, shot himself in the foot.

He said Aston was using the accusations to sell books and said he was hiding his employment history.

    ‘I don’t see declarations that he’s a former Liberal
    Party staffer… I don’t see declarations he’s a former
Qantas employee,’ the Prime Minister said.

But before the book even gets to the contents page there is a photo of Aston that refers to him
    as the then-Qantas corporate communications
    senior adviser.

Joe Aston (pictured) got the kind of book launch every first time author
dreams of – massive amounts of free publicity online, in newspapers and on TV and radio

Anthony Albanese (right) is pictured with his fiance Jodie Haydon (left) and then Qantas CEO Alan Joyce on March 31, 2023 in Sydney, Australia

And the first chapter of the book reveals that he worked for
then-Liberal MP Bruce Baird, who held the southern Sydney seat of Cook before Scott Morrison.

‘My professional history is not a secret or not disclosed, it’s
in the first line of the first page of the book,’ Aston said on Tuesday night, just before his book launch.

Though he was grateful for the free publicity Mr Albanese’s response gave the book, Aston was still ‘staggered’ at the untrue
claims about him the Prime Minister made.

‘He’s under enormous pressure and I know, I’ve seen this many times
with public figures and leaders who struggle to see their own part in it, the terrible circumstances that
    they create,’ he said.

Extravagant Qantas perk Anthony Albanese FAILED to declare is revealed…
    after two days of denials

Asked if Mr Albanese had been poorly advised in his attack, Aston, who is a
former Australian Financial Review columnist, wonders if the Prime Minister ‘even listens to advice at this
    point’.

‘All he’s doing is talking around the issue and he’s blaming me and he’s
blaming other MP’s for also taking upgrades (on Qantas flights).

‘He’s avoiding the only thing that he can’t talk about, which is,
did you ask Qantas for confirmed upgrades on your private holidays when you were the Transport Minister?
The answer is «yes» and he’s desperately trying to avoid saying it.’

Smelling blood, Opposition leader Peter Dutton said the Prime Minister should refer himself to the
anti-corruption commission over the flight upgrades.

Coming on top of Mr Albanese’s tone deaf purchase of a $4.3million clifftop mansion while so many people are struggling to pay their mortgage or rent, the latest blow to his credibility has led to calls for him to resign.

Aston refuses to be drawn on this, though.

‘I never expected this (part of the book) to even this part
to get this far. I really am shocked at how it’s blown up.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is pictured with the then Qantas CEO Alan Joyce

Anthony Albanese is pictured on August 14, 2023 as Qantas unveiled its Yes23 livery in support of a Yes vote in the Indigenous Voice to Parliament referendum

Among the movers and shakers at Joe Aston’s book launch in the ritzy Hemmesphere club in Sydney was
    Tabcorp director David Gallop (pictured)

Paul Barry (pictured in blue shirt), the host of the ABC’s Media Watch show,
    was also at the launch

‘So to the extent that it has, I would say …

anyone who reads the book will learn that this book is not a hit job on Anthony Albanese.

    This book is about Qantas.

‘Anthony Albanese is an example of how Qantas influences politicians on both sides of
the aisle, Labor, Liberal, National, you name it. They’ve been doing it for more than a generation.

‘They’re the best influence peddler in Australia. I’m not here trying
to get a scalp. That’s not what this book is about and
    it never was.’

But the conversation Daily Mail Australia had with Aston mirrors the conversations being had across Australia and eventually winds up back on Mr Albanese.

‘Even I’ve underestimated how fed up the public is with the
freebie mindset of politicians,’ he said.

Guests at Joe Aston’s book launch on Tuesday night are pictured pointing for emphasis or to someone they recognise

There was no shortage of free alcohol (pictured) available at the launch
    of Joe Aston’s book

Joe Aston is pictured in the exclusive Hemmesphere club in Sydney,
where his book The Chairman’s Lounge was launched

‘And unfortunately for Albanese, he’s been in politics a long time and that kind of behaviour
is quite normalised to him, is what I’ve seen.

‘I mean, he loves the free concert tickets and sitting at the front row of
    the Australian Open Tennis.

‘I went to the Australian Open Tennis as a journalist almost every year for
12 years and he was the only Prime Minister
    (I saw there).

‘Those tickets are worth thousands of dollars
to sit in the front row of the International Grand Slam. He’s the
first Prime Minister who I’ve ever seen do that.

‘That to me is a sign that he doesn’t quite get what it looks like
to others when he’s on the gravy train. And I
think (the claims in the book are) just another example of that.’

In Australian politics it’s regular practise for an MP’s travel to be booked in economy, then someone in their office phones the airline and asks if their flight can be upgraded.

The difference with the Prime Minister is that ‘he
had a very direct line to Alan Joyce,’ Aston said.

‘The other thing is there’s a difference
between an upgrade where it’s in the booking and if the seat’s empty when the flight closes, you’ll get upgraded.

‘This is different. This is a confirmed upgrade where the ticket
is converted and you are guaranteed. You’re not going to the airport
crossing your fingers going «Geez, I hope there is a spare seat».

‘You’re guaranteed. You turn up knowing you’re getting a seat and
the only person at Qantas who can issue those types of
upgrades is the CEO. No other executive can do
    that.

‘So it is beyond question that Alan joints authorised these upgrades (for Anthony Albanese).’

Aston enjoyed many upgrades to the pointy end
of planes during his time as a travel journalist, and understands the attraction for politicians to get up there.

‘These things are tempting and it’s human nature too.

Once you’ve experienced the front of the plane, it’s very hard to go
    back.

‘For politicians, they run around with all these staff and
they’ve got chauffeured cars and they fly in business, but they don’t get paid like CEOs …

‘They’re not in a situation where they can afford to
go flying around in the front of the plane on personal travel.

‘A normal person would say «Therefore I won’t (fly business class). But (for politicians) it’s a culture of entitlement.’

Aston is careful to point out that most people would say politicians are ‘very well paid compared to the average worker’.

But that doesn’t stop some MPs from desperately seeking a free ride, whether it’s a flight upgrade, concert tickets or the executive box at sporting events.

Late on Wednesday night, a spokeswoman Mr Albanese said ‘The Prime Minister did not ever call Alan Joyce seeking an upgrade’.

‘All travel has been appropriately declared and is a matter of public record.’

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Qantas for comment.

  12. The in-laws of former Syrian President Bashar Al Assad
have fled the UK and are believed to be in Moscow, their neighbours and
    friends have told MailOnline.

Fawaz Akhras, a renowned cardiologist, and Sahar Akhras, a retired diplomat,
are the parents of Asma Al Assad, who married the deposed Syrian dictator in 2000 when he was
    studying in London.

The couple live in a smart, modest home in North Acton, west
London where they raised Asma before she went on to live a life of opulence as
the Syrian First Lady while her husband waged a campaign of terror to suppress
    his political opponents.

The owner of a Syrian supermarket in Acton,
who knows Mr Akhras but did not wish to be named told MailOnline:
‘I saw him about ten days ago and he said he was going abroad for a while and that his wife was already out of the
    country.

‘He didn’t say where but there is a large Syrian community in Acton and the word is that he and
his wife have gone to Moscow to console their daughter and son-in-law.

‘It doesn’t surprise us because they are a close family and they’ve always supported their daughter.’

One neighbour, who has known the family for 30 years but did not want to reveal
her name, said that the property had been empty for the past week and that Mr Akhras
and his wife have likely flown to Russia to meet their daughter and her family.

She added: ‘The house is empty and we’ve heard that they are abroad.
They are usually around but keep a low profile because there
are a lot of Syrians living around here.’

The Kremlin has confirmed that Al Assad, Asma and their three children were given asylum on the
direct orders of Vladimir Putin after fleeing Syria.

The west London suburb of Acton has one of the capital’s largest
Syrian communities and many had gathered in a local coffee shop to discuss events in the country.

One man, Tariq, said: ‘We all know that Asma’s parents
live in Acton, but we don’t bother them because it’s not their fault that their son in law
was such a brutal tyrant. And we also don’t want to do anything
    illegal in this country.

‘We’ve heard that they have left the UK for now, partly for
their own safety and because they want to be with their daughter.’

Meanwhile Abdel, who said that his father knows Mr Akhras, added:
‘He (Mr Akhras) and his wife are not in the UK. They’re probably with
their daughter comforting her and helping to spend all
the money they’ve stolen from the Syrian people.’

Mr and Mrs Akhras raised their daughter Asma in their terraced house,
    which is worth £1million today.

Born in 1975, Asma enjoyed a gilded childhood before carving out
a successful career in international banking.

On the face of it, she was destined for a glamorous
career, having been raised by her hard-working Syrian parents.

    For years Asma was the face of female liberation in the Middle East;
with her successful career in banking and her secular British upbringing

As a child, she was enrolled at a prestigious public school,
Queen’s College, Marylebone, where fees are almost £9,000 a
term before graduating at King’s College London in 1996 with a degree in computer science and French literature.

Not even Asma, who was known simply as ‘Emma’ by friends at school, could have imagined that she would go on to marry an authoritarian president who would rule over Syria with an iron fist.
She was later branded the ‘First Lady of Hell’ herself.

How the British-born wife of Bashar al-Assad became a key
    figure in his tyrannical regime

It was during the 90s in London that she grew close to
future President Bashar al Assad, who had moved to the capital in 1992
to train as an eye doctor.

But two years later, his own ambitions to break into
the medical profession in London were stalled as his elder brother died in a
car crash and he was suddenly propelled to being the heir apparent for his father
Hafez, who had ruled over Syria since 1971.

The London student, more interested in technology and medicine, was called back home.

And after fast-track military training, rising from captain to colonel in three years, Bashar was ready
    to succeed his father.

When Hafez died in June 2000, Bashar kept the Assad
dynasty going, winning 97 per cent of the vote and taking over as president.

Asma’s banking career, which started at major companies including Deutsche Bank and JP Morgan, was dramatically put on hold as she embarked on a new life, marrying Bashar the same year he
    came to power.

Her seemingly ‘normal’ upbringing had taken a fatal turn after her husband’s ‘accidental’ rise
to presidency transformed her life forever.

The couple have three children, who are aged between 19 and 23, and are presumed to be
with their parents trying to find a safe haven

Bashar Al Assad and his wife Asma are pictured in Paris in 2008 (left and right)

Asma, who holds dual citizenship, British and Syrian,
was born in London in 1975.

Her parents, both Sunni Muslims, moved from Syria to London in the Fifties so that her
father, a cardiologist at the Cromwell Hospital and in Harley Street, could get the best
    possible education and medical training.

Inside Bashar al-Assad’s rise to Syrian president: From London eye doctor to brutal dictator

She was first educated at a Church of England school in Ealing before attending
    Queen’s College, Harley Street.

The former president and first lady, whose 24-year dynasty came crashing down when Syrian rebel forces stormed the country, have three children who are aged between 19 and 23.

At Queen’s College — alma mater of heiress Christina Onassis, broadcaster Emma Freud and celebutante Peaches
Geldof — the girl fated to become a president’s wife was said to have often ‘bunked off lessons’.

Queen’s girls are known for their tendency to frequent the nearby shops of Oxford Street in break time – and
it seems Asma was no exception.

A former pupil once said: ‘Like Peaches Geldof, they are mouthy and precocious,
or outspoken and opinionated, depending how you look at it.
    No shrinking violets there.’

Another said: ‘The girls are concerned about global poverty, but they also love
    designer handbags.’

From Queen’s, where she achieved four A-levels, Asma went to King’s College London to read Computer Science and take a diploma in French Literature.

She graduated with a First and, after six months
of travelling, joined Deutsche Bank as an analyst in hedge-fund
    management.

She then moved to the investment bank JP Morgan and worked in Paris and New York, as well as London. On family holidays
back in Syria, she met Bashar.

Then he, too, came to London to study ophthalmology, though he had to leave early
to return to Syria after his elder brother’s death.

Asma started seeing him in secret, resigning from JP Morgan just a month before the wedding without being
able to explain the real reason.

As she told American Vogue, her boss couldn’t believe her timing, as she quit after closing a
major deal and two months before her bonus was due.

She said: ‘He thought I was having a nervous breakdown because
nobody quits two months before bonus-time after closing a really big deal.

‘He couldn’t accept my resignation. I was like: ‘Please, I just want to get
out, I’ve had enough.’ And he [said]: ‘Don’t worry, take time off, it happens
to the best of us.’ ‘

Asma became one and the same with the Syrian regime’s terrible suppression of its people

After their wedding in December 2000, Asma told The Observer that she spent the first weeks of her marriage travelling around rural areas of
Syria in jeans and a t-shirt, so that she could ‘meet ordinary Syrians before the
    world met her’.

Before the outbreak of the civil war in Syria in March
2011, the first lady had projected an image of a reformer. For years, she was was the face of female liberation in the Middle East.

Assads’ new life in Russia: Syrian monster, Brit wife & kids take
    $2bn fortune to Moscow

In February 2011, Vogue magazine called an interview
with her ‘A Rose in the Desert’ describing her as the ‘freshest
and most magnetic of first ladies’.

But that year, war broke out in Syria between rebels and
Assad’s regime over his brutally repressive regime and the reputation of the country as open and secular was trashed.

The gushing profile, published as Assad began terrorising his own people, was met with a wave of
criticism and both Buck and Vogue’s editor, Anna Wintour,
were accused of pushing a public relations campaign on the regime’s
    behalf, reported The Guardian.

In June 2012, Wintour issued a statement about the feature, saying, via The New York
Times: ‘Like many at that time, we were hopeful that
the Assad regime would be open to a more progressive society.

‘Subsequent to our interview, as the terrible events of the past year and a half unfolded
in Syria, it became clear that its priorities
and values were completely at odds with those of Vogue.

‘The escalating atrocities in Syria are unconscionable and we deplore the actions
of the Assad regime in the strongest possible terms.’

During the conflict the couple are understood to have drifted apart,
but with Assad’s mother dying in 2016 and Mrs Assad’s diagnosis of breast cancer
in 2018, she was repositioned at the heart of the regime’s economy.

But this new role was nothing more than a ‘shakedown’ operation of the country’s middle class merchants and businessmen.

She orchestrated a secretive labyrinth of committees and policies, run by her henchman, which controlled
everything from access to the internet to subsided food rations.

Her empire also extended to the distribution of foreign aid –
effectively she controlled who got what when

With rumours swirling that she and her husband are
seeking haven in despotic regimes such as Russia and Iran, her once
gilded facade has been torn asunder utterly

Her empire also extended to the distribution of foreign aid – effectively she controlled who
    got what when.

With her role within Assad’s dictatorship growing, she
was unable to maintain her early image of the liberated woman operating at the heart of power in a Muslim country.

She became one and the same with the Syrian regime’s terrible suppression of its people.

But as pressure mounted on the oppression of the Syrian people, even Vogue pulled its interview with her
from its website in 2012 after public backlash to the war.

Despite the challenges to her public image, she was still
seen on the international stage meeting with the heads of state in Europe.

But Assad’s forces have clung to power until now, thanks to opposition forces reaching Damascus and
recapturing areas on the outskirts of the capital following a years-long siege.

The regime has been accused of severe human rights violations and cruel assaults against civilians throughout the 13-year civil war, including the use of chemical weapons
    against their own people.

President Assad, his wife, and their three children have
been driven out of Syria, leaving their presidential
palace to begin a new life in Russia after being granted asylum by Vladimir Putin.

Ms Al-Assad has become accustomed to a life of luxury, with reports that
she spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on home furnishings and clothes during her husband’s reign of terror.

The US state department estimates that the family are worth $2billion, with their wealth concealed in numerous accounts,
shell companies, offshore tax havens and real estate portfolios.

Now they are likely to draw on their family connections and extensive assets
in Moscow in the hope of keeping up their comfortable lifestyle in exile.

The Syrian dictator’s extended family bought up at least 20 Moscow apartments worth more than £30million in recent years, illustrating Russia’s status as a safe
    haven for the clan.

The Kremlin today confirmed that the family was given asylum on the
    direct orders of Putin.

Moscow disclosed no further details, with presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov telling reporters today: ‘We have nothing to say about Assad’s whereabouts.’
