El vicepresidente de EE.UU, Mike Pence, acusó este viernes a China de «minar el avance de la democracia» en Venezuela con su negativa a otorgar una visa a Ricardo Hausmann, quien fue designado por el líder del Parlamento venezolano, Juan Guaidó, como representante ante el Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo (BID).
«Una vez más China pone por delante sus propios intereses a costa del pueblo venezolano», señaló Pence en un artículo publicado en el diario The Miami Herald, en el que también acusó a Cuba, Rusia y Turquía de apuntalar a la «dictadura» de Nicolás Maduro.
«Maduro debe irse», subrayó en un artículo en el que reafirma que Estados Unidos seguirá apoyando la causa de la «libertad» (en español) de Venezuela y advierte a Maduro, usando palabras del presidente Donald Trump, que las medidas contra su régimen pueden «ser mucho más duras si es necesario».
Pence dijo que el BID va a celebrar este mes en China su reunión anual, pero Hausmann no podrá asistir como «representante legítimo» de Venezuela por la negativa de las autoridades chinas a darle la visa.
«Es la primera vez en la historia del banco que una nación anfitriona (de la reunión anual) rechaza a uno de los miembros», dice Pence.
En el mismo artículo, el vicepresidente estadounidense pidió la «liberación inmediata» de Roberto Marrero, principal colaborador de Guaidó, quien es reconocido como presidente encargado de Venezuela por más de 50 países que desconocen a Nicolás Maduro como jefe de Estado de Venezuela.
Marrero fue «brutalmente secuestrado», en palabras de Pence, este jueves por agentes de inteligencia de Maduro, a los que definió como «matones».
«No toleraremos el encarcelamiento de Marrero ni la intimidación hecha al Gobierno legítimo de Venezuela. Los responsables tendrán que rendir cuentas», aseveró.
Pence destacó que «las políticas y la corrupción» de Maduro han llevado a Venezuela a una situación catastrófica, con nueve de cada diez venezolanos viviendo en la pobreza y más de tres millones que han abandonado su país, a los que pueden sumarse otros dos millones este año.
El vicepresidente enumeró las medias tomadas por el Gobierno de Donald Trump para aislar al «dictador» y apoyar al pueblo venezolano en su demanda de libertad y asistirlo con ayuda humanitaria.
Sin embargo, dijo, Maduro sigue obstaculizando «el camino de Venezuela hacia la libertad y la democracia» y lo hace con «la ayuda de naciones que se niegan a reconocer que no tiene derecho legítimo a detentar el poder y continúan apuntalando su dictadura».
Pence destacó que «la inteligencia y los militares cubanos siguen entrenando, apoyando y equipando a la policía secreta de Venezuela para que «hostigue a los manifestantes y silencie a la oposición».
De Turquía señaló que sigue haciendo negocios con oro venezolano, lo que le proporciona a Maduro el «efectivo que necesita desesperadamente para sostener su régimen», y de Rusia recordó que Rusia vetó una resolución en la ONU para destrabar la entrega de ayuda humanitaria al pueblo de Venezuela.
El vicepresidente hizo un llamamiento a «cada una de las naciones de la comunidad internacional» para que se unan a Estados Unidos y le retiren «el apoyo a la fracasada dictadura de Nicolás Maduro».
