Se trata de una ciudadana que llegó a territorio chileno el pasado 22 de diciembre, proveniente de Reino Unido, a la cual se le detectó la nueva variante del coronavirus. Las autoridades han decretado una cuarentena de 10 días para todo aquel que llegue del extranjero.

«Inmediatamente hemos tomado las medidas de alerta y esta persona se encuentra en el hospital para ser vigilada de forma estricta, igual que sus contactos estrechos», informó este 29 de diciembre la subsecretaria de Salud, Paula Daza.

Pese a que el Gobierno chileno suspendió todos los vuelos con Reino Unido desde el 22 de diciembre, la pasajera ingresó ese mismo día en un vuelo proveniente de Madrid, lugar donde hizo escala antes de llegar a Chile.

Asintomática, a la paciente se le realizó un test PCR a su ingreso a Santiago de Chile, después viajó a Temuco en el sur del país donde comenzó con el periodo de cuarentena.

Al día siguiente recibió el resultado positivo de la prueba, por lo que las autoridades decidieron analizar la muestra en el Instituto de Salud Público, donde se secuenció la muestra y se identificó la nueva variante del SARS-CoV-2.

La mujer fue trasladada al hospital de manera preventiva donde se le hace un seguimiento detallado. Además, sus contactos más estrechos también fueron llevados al centro de salud.

Por su parte, las autoridades realizan un rastreo al resto de viajeros que iban a bordo de los dos vuelos en los que estuvo la paciente.

Luego de confirmarse el primer caso de la nueva variante del Covid-19, el Gobierno de Sebastián Piñera anunció que todas las personas provenientes del extranjero deben hacer una cuarentena obligatoria de diez días que solo podrá eximirse cuando se reciban los resultados de una prueba PCR negativa realizada a partir del séptimo día de confinamiento.

Con más de 603.000 contagios totales desde marzo y cerca de las 16.500 muertes, Chile ha experimentado en las últimas dos semanas una segunda ola de contagios con un incremento de más del 30 % en el número de casos.

De acuerdo con la Organización Mundial de la Salud, la nueva variante ya ha sido detectada en varios países, entre ellos Alemania, Australia, Canadá, Corea del Sur, Dinamarca, España, Francia, Italia, Islandia, los Países Bajos y ahora Chile.
