LUXEMBOURG, Oct 7 (Reuters) – Germany’ѕ economic model is not broken but Europe’ѕ biggest ecomomy һas lost competitiveness оver the pastt decade, German Finance Minister Christian Lindnr sqid ᧐n Mondɑy.
«We can’t be satisfied with the economic developments in Germany,»
he toⅼd journalists aheawd ᧐f a Eurogfoup meeting.
The German economy iis expected tߋ contract Ьy 0.2% іn 2024, an economy ministry spokesperson ѕaid on Monday, cutting the
forecast from а ⲣrevious projection oof 0.3% growth this үear.
If realised, tһis wⲟuld be the sеcond consecutive year off contractioon fߋr Germany’s economy, wһіch was the weakest among
its large euro zone peers last year ԝith a 0.3% drcline in grⲟss domestic product.
Lindner ѕaid the gogernment was introducing supply-ѕide measures toߋ trу
to return tһe economy tߋ growth.
«After these reforms, Germany will have more competitiveness again,» Lindner sаiԀ,
adding tһat the growth initiative was just а first step
fоr an economic turnaround, «but we have to build on it.»
AMBITION ΝEEDED
Lindner ѕaid «ambition» ԝаs needed to keep
ᎬU pyblic finances іn օrder, օr to put
them back in ordeг ᴡhere necessary.
«I can only encourage everyone to implement structural reforms and to make unpopular decisions,» Lindner
said. «What seems to be unpopular at the moment is the willingness to take responsibility for the next generation and for the stability of the European Union as a whole.»
Lindner ssid hе cоuld not commentt оn the French budget plans beсause he had not had
the chance to talk ԝith his French colleagues ʏet, but he would ⅾo so оn Monday

«We should all realise that the credibility of public finances vis-à-vis the capital markets is not to be trifled with,» Lindner saiԀ.
«We must credibly reduce our deficits and our debt so that we can continue to finance ourselves well and in a stable manner.»

A video of Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix’s awkward reaction after they were asked to share their thoughts on Joker:
Folie à Deux has gone viral amid the immense backlash that the film is facing.
The highly anticipated Joker sequel hit theaters on Friday, but
immediately, it was fiercely panned by viewers and critics alike.
Amid the scrutiny, a clip of Lady Gaga and Joaquin discussing the film has taken over the web.
While chatting with Good Morning Britain last week,
the two stars were asked if the movie turned out to be ‘everything they expected.’
Immediately, they both turned to look at one another and smiled.
A video of Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix’s awkward reaction after they were asked to share their thoughts on Joker: Folie à Deux has gone viral amid the backlash the film is facing
The highly anticipated Joker sequel hit theaters on Friday, but was almost immediately panned by viewers and
critics
For a few seconds, the two stars sat in silence as they both waited for the other to answer the question.
‘Tell them how you feel, Joaquin,’ Lady Gaga, 38, said to
her costar as she held out a fake microphone in front of him.
‘It’s so hard to talk about but I think we feel like we achieved what we set out to
do,’ Joaquin, 49, simply stated.
Someone on X, formerly Twitter, posted the moment online
last week and it went viral, gaining more then 437,000 views in a matter of days – and many users took their initial silence
as proof that they ‘didn’t like’ the film.
The internet has been flooded with negative posts about the flick ever since it premiered, with one user branding it as a
‘bore’ and another claiming it had ‘no plot.’
Many social media users have also slammed the movie’s final scene, which
saw main character Arthur Fleck (portrayed by Joaquin) brutally stabbed to death by a fellow inmate.
This meant that the man that audiences had been watching over the course of the two movies was
never the Joker at all, but in fact, the infamous villain from the Batman series was really just the random inmate who killed Arthur
in the last moments of the film.
The shocking twist left numerous viewers unsatisfied, and they took
to social media to share their frustration.

The shocking twist ending left many viewers unsatisfied and they took to social media to share
their frustration
‘The ending made the movie a complete waste,’ one outraged user wrote.
‘The ending was pathetic,’ scathed someone else.
‘WTF you mean no Joker?’
‘The ending made no sense,’ added another person.
‘That ending? It’s so bad that not only it ruins Joker
2 but also the first Joker for the audience,’ read a fourth tweet.
‘The Joker had so much potential but that f**king ending ruined everything,’ a fifth
said.
The Todd Phillips-directed musical serves as a
follow-up to the 2019 box office hit, which was
simply titled Joker.
The first film grossed over $1 billion and at the time was the highest-grossing R-rated film
of all time. It received 11 Oscar nominations – two of
which it won.
The sequel, however, has already been much less successful.
It had a lackluster $40 million debut at the box office in its first weekend, and has
a low rating of 33 percent and 31 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
‘Undoing much of the goodwill from its predecessor, the sequel convolutes
what could have been a unique character study into a bloated encore that
goes out with a whimper,’ reads one review.
Another critic wrote, ‘This movie is a disjointed mess and a waste
of time. It’s just tired, not particularly interesting, but it
does look good from a production design standpoint.’

What is ruby bridges sister and brother names?
Asked by Wiki User
blanket, bob,lucy,vicky,and lucky
Bright and early, my old friend, the beauty and wellness entrepreneur Liz
Earle, is standing at my door clutching a Kilner jar with
what looks like a small sponge floating in murky water.
‘I made kombucha for you,’ she says with an enthusiasm I don’t entirely share.
(The sponge, it turns out, is the Scoby, or ‘symbiotic
culture of bacteria and yeast’, which is what’s used to ferment sweetened tea to
make kombucha. I don’t realise at the time, but this
hideous thing takes weeks to develop and is in fact a very generous gift.)
The truth is, I’d drink (almost) anything if it gave me Liz’s zip.
At 61, a mother of five and a new grandmother, she honestly looks 20 years younger.
Fans of her YouTube channel and her 170,000 Instagram followers will know
how bright and smooth her skin is, but in person she is fizzing with energy,
too.
Liz and I have been friends for 25 years – over which time she
has somehow seemed to gain in vitality as I, nine years her
junior, have… well, deflated.
Beauty and wellness entrepreneur Liz Earle, right, and Beatrice Aidin met
back in the 1990s when they were both beauty journalists
So here’s my plan. I am going to Live Like Liz for a full eight weeks, morning to
night, to see just how much I, too, can turn back the clock.
I am going to eat, drink and exercise like Liz, ‘ground myself’ in a flower
bed in my pyjamas like her, and even tape up my mouth à la Liz.
From my gut to my hormones, my brain to the very cells of my skin, I will follow
the ‘bio-hacks’ set out in her new book A Better Second Half:
Dial Back Your Age To Live A Longer, Healthier,
Happier Life, which swiftly became a bestseller on its release this year.
Liz says it can’t fail, so long as I commit to it.
‘Who’s to say we can’t or shouldn’t change the way we age?’ she asks.
‘I was stronger, fitter and more capable in my 50s than I
was in my 40s, so why can’t I be even more so in my 60s,
70s and beyond?’
Perhaps more significantly, after the ‘car crash of emotional wreckage’ caused by the breakdown of her second marriage, and
the divorce she went through in 2020, she now says: ‘I’m happier at 61 than I was at
40.’
Career-wise, it shows. When we met back in the 1990s we were both beauty journalists.
At launches for new products, I’d merrily down the free Krug while Liz sipped
sparkling water. ‘Ah Bea, you were the yin to my yang,’ she says.
Now, her wellness empire has mushroomed… and I’m suffering major work
anxiety, a not-unrelated financial crisis and severe sciatica.
Frankly, I look and feel knackered. My skin is
dull and I have dark circles under my eyes. Physical pain interferes with my
sleep, and I’ve been turning rather too readily to the sauvignon blanc to help
me nod off.
Food is not a priority: I’m either not interested or craving sugar, which means I’m a good 10lb heavier than I should be.
So, can living like my rather fabulous friend make me feel as young
as she looks? More to the point – can I really stick to it, kombucha and all?
‘Come on Bea, get off your backside!’ Liz demands…
Liz (left) puts Beatrice through her paces in the gym. Beatrice needs extra help with
exercise because of her sciatica
Week one: I face up to my middle-age spread
Liz’s top-line diet philosophy is high-protein, low carb, meaning she’s a fan of lots of
foods I love but didn’t think I should eat: butter, unprocessed meat, avocados,
good quality cheese, taramasalata and thick Greek
yoghurt.
High protein helps us ‘shift to a leaner, more toned shape, and lose that middle-aged spread,’ she says.
Timing matters. Liz eats two meals a day – brunch around 11am and dinner
at 7pm. The order matters too: clear your plate of chicken before rice, because eating protein before carbs keeps blood sugar levels stable.
In recent years she has increased her coffee intake (before 2pm) because studies show four to five cups is ‘strongly associated
with living longer’ thanks to the bioactives in coffee beans such
as chlorogenic acid.
She eats wheatgerm, soya beans and nuts to up
her intake of spermidine – a dietary molecule that interacts with our DNA and mimics an anti-ageing process called autophagy, which
de-ages us at a cellular level.
Alcohol is basically a no-no. Liz has the ‘occasional glass’ of wine
or tequila, but never more than two and never alone.
I chuck out the ready meals and plonk, roll up my sleeves and
start cooking from scratch. I grill venison, roast a chicken and make soups with the leftovers.
Eating at specific times works for me – I’m never very hungry first thing – and enjoying the protein part of each meal first means
I’m fuller and find it easy to cut back on my carb portions.
Gut health is a big focus, which means more fermented foods.
Much to my surprise, I love the kombucha and soon start to
brew my own using Liz’s Scoby. But homemade kimchi – fermented veg – is a harder sell.
When a lunch guest asks me why I’m forcing myself to eat something
I dislike so much, I reply solemnly: ‘Liz told me to.’
Week two: I discover I can do only 3 press-ups
I really need help with exercise because sciatica means my
normal routine has gone to pot.
Thankfully, Liz reckons just ten minutes a
day of exercises such as squats, lunges and press-ups is more valuable in the long term than a high-intensity gym session once
a week or a long park run.
She introduces me to her personal trainer, Michael Garry, who delivers the (bombshell, but welcome) news that running any distance over 5k can ‘start
to have negative effects’ on our immune system
and bone strength. If you’re a runner, make it harder
by speeding up your time, not increasing your distance.
At Michael’s insistence, I consult a physio about my sciatica, and then he devises a daily regime for
me. I try press-ups and make it to three.
Mortifying. Perseverance is clearly key. As are weights, especially in your
50s. ‘The more muscle you have, the more your bones are protected from osteoporosis,
especially during midlife,’ says Michael.
For cardio, says Beatrice, I keep swimming twice a week.
But instead of plodding up and down the pool,
I start to compete with myself, speeding up the laps
For my slack and flabby upper arms, he advises shoulder presses and hammer curls, with 3kg weights in both hands.
I try tricep dips off a chair, and quickly find I can increase my reps – until by week four I’m doing
two sets of 15.
I work out three times a week at home. At first the routine
takes 40 minutes but the more I do, the faster I do it, until the whole thing – stretching, press-ups, weights – takes just 20 minutes.
For cardio, I keep swimming twice a week.
But instead of plodding up and down the pool, I start to compete with myself,
speeding up the laps.
Week three: I slow the hormonal roller coaster
I’m menopausal and already on HRT, but I know I could improve how I feel, which is sluggish and foggy.
Liz introduces me to something called the ‘estrobolome’
– the specific collection of bacteria in the gut that influences how our body uses oestrogen.
Put simply, some microbes improve the efficiency with which
oestrogen reaches tissues around the body, meaning we use our dwindling supplies more effectively.
The best way to support your estrobolome is by eating fibre from veg, seeds and nuts, plus some
of the low-sugar fruits such as apples, berries and plums.
Back to the supermarket I go.
To boost the happy hormone serotonin, my saintly mentor insists I finish my morning shower with a minimum 60-second blast of icy cold water, resulting – she claims – in a ‘post-shock high’ and ‘genuine glow’.
Hmmm. I find it hard to relinquish the comfort
of a hot shower and feel not happy but mutinous as I
step out of the bathroom shivering.
Week four: I stand in the flower bed
Living Like Liz means getting outside first thing in the
morning and standing barefoot on the grass. ‘Grounding’ apparently enables electrons from the surface of the Earth
to transmit deep into the body, ‘where they have an anti-inflammatory effect’.
Liz tells me she does this in the tranquil grounds of her glorious pile in the
West Country. I do it in a flower bed in my shared patio, still in my pyjamas, and feel,
well, very self-conscious. Later I graduate to the
park, and – look away now – tread in dog mess, which does not improve
my emotional wellbeing.
She also encourages us to keep a Five Minute Gratitude Journal twice a day.
‘Gratitude is… a superpower that improves longevity
and supports the immune system,’ she says.
I can’t help but think my better-off mate has rather a lot more to smile about than me but, following instructions, I write down three things I am grateful for every morning,
and every night a short list of ‘good things’ that happened that day, plus another (longer) list of ‘things that are concerning me’.
My scepticism around gratitude slowly lifts as I find it does
make me realise what’s important and what’s not. It helps me see that things are a lot brighter than I thought.
Packing in a rush for a weekend away, I can’t find my journal and am surprised by how bereft I feel without it.
Week five: I start to sleep well
I’m a night owl – I stay up too late watching TV and end up hitting
my snooze button past 8.30am… and occasionally edging towards
10am.
Liz reckons anyone can improve their sleep if they follow her routine, which
means setting an evening alarm for 9pm – to remind yourself to start ‘winding down for bed’.
Emails, social media and TV are switched off, replaced by
a printed book or a podcast. She takes 120g of magnesium glycinate
in a milky drink half an hour before bed (and stops
eating two hours before).
Living Like Liz means getting outside first thing
in the morning
Liz wears a bamboo fibre nightie or pyjamas to keep
warm because she sleeps with an open window, which she
covers with blackout blinds and curtains, and sprinkles her pillow with a few drops of neat lavender essential oil.
I’m an e-book reader, so already failing at this routine.
Still, I leave my phone charging in the kitchen and buy
a regular alarm clock. The lavender oil makes me sneeze, so I
spray my pillows with C. Atherley Geranium Spray instead.
Oh, and I tape my lips up – Liz shows me how when she
delivers the kombucha. Forcing yourself to breathe through your nose
is said to promote more restful sleep.
All of this is time-consuming and takes practise, but I
find the ritual soothing. Five weeks in, I’m getting to sleep
earlier than I have for years – at 10.30pm after 20 minutes drop-off time -and waking at 7.30am.
How virtuous!
Week six: I crash off the wagon
I’m doing my best, but then I go for lunch with a friend who chirpily
suggests a glass of wine, which turns into
a bottle. And then a second. Later, with a daytime hangover,
I head to M&S and find reduced dauphinoise potatoes, which become dinner.
Liz has got me on a blood sugar tracker called Lingo (£289 for two months – you
jab a biosensor the size and shape of a plastic bottle top into
your upper arm, and then link it to an app on your
phone), which shows a massive post-potato spike and then a
huge slump, which makes me tired and irritable. Who knew that such deliciousness had
such a high glycaemic load?
I call Liz to ‘fess up. ‘I have the odd day when I lie in,
eat too much cake and drink too much tequila,’ she says.
‘But that’s fine because you then know what to do to put it right.
It’s not about being perfect.’ Phew!
Week seven: I tackle my financial mess
Re-reading my journal really helps here. By documenting what I was so worried about day by
day, my perspective on it changes.
Here, in black and white, is a record of how I felt at the
start of this project and how I’ve evolved.
I’ve come unstuck – in a good way. I’m not going to pretend it’s
been easy because change is uncomfortable,
but I realise there’s simply nothing to be gained from the worry spiral.
If freelance life is tough, and my income erratic, I’m going to do something
about it. Buoyed with the confidence that comes with action, I apply for part-time admin jobs.
As personal trainer Michael observes as we work out on Zoom, I wouldn’t have done this before.
He’s right. Finally I’ve started to take control.
Week eight: And the winner is…
So how have eight weeks of Living Like Liz
changed me?
Physically, I’m in much better shape. I’ve lost 7 lb and taken an extraordinary 5 in off my waist and 11 in off my body as a whole.
Those three pathetic press-ups have become a whopping
40 per workout, and the measly 3kg weights are now 6kg,
meaning I have proper bicep definition. The sleeveless tops will be coming out again this party season.

Our essential guide to beating back pain: What’s causing
your aches
My skin is clearer, eyes brighter and face
more defined because I’ve reduced the carb-inducing bloat.
I’m sleeping better and feeling infinitely less anxious.
Most remarkably – and this is really life-changing – my sciatica is
almost gone and I can come off strong painkillers. I know
sciatica can disappear of its own accord, but the
timing is surely no coincidence. All those exercises have strengthened the muscles around my spine
and buttocks and I’m convinced it’s done the trick.
I meet Liz for lunch, nervous about whether she’ll see a difference.
‘Oh wow,’ she says, taking a good look at her pupil.
‘Those arms! You definitely look younger.’
We chat for a while and she adds: ‘You also seem more content and optimistic.
You have an inner glow and a halo of positivity.’
Well, yes, she would say that, wouldn’t she? (Probably. Though Liz is known for her candour,
so it’s not a given.) ‘I wasn’t sure you were going to prioritise yourself enough and commit,’ she admits ‘You
weren’t an easy nut to crack so I’m thrilled.’
I’m delighted with my gold star. And I’m grateful to her, which is one
of the key lessons I’ve learned. Gratitude makes everything feel better.
That – along with the kombucha, ice-cold showers (which I have learned
to love) and the odd tequila – are the habits I’ll hold
on to. But not (shudder!) the kimchi or flower beds.
As Liz says, everyone deserves to have a better second half
– and if I can do it, anyone can.
A Better Second Half: Dial Back Your Age To Live A Longer,
Healthier, Happier Life, by Liz Earle (Hodder & Stoughton, £22).
Instagram
Forget tiny chihuahuas peeping out of handbags à la Paris Hilton, or Taylor Swift with her adorably grumpy looking Scottish Fold cats who
have become celebrities in their own right.
When it comes to capturing my heart with a cuddly creature,
it’s the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger, 75, who’s reinvented himself as the internet’s favourite granddad with his wholesome life with a menagerie of animals, who has won me over.
The jewel in the crown of his ever-growing brood of beasts is Schnelly the
pig, who joined the family in April last year, making the star the latest in a long list of celebrities
to realise the joys of a porky pal – along with Ariana Grande,
Miley Cyrus and the Beckhams.
I’m completely smitten with the cuteness of pet pigs. I lose hours
scrolling through Instagram, looking at pictures of furry little piglets
with pretty pink snouts.
There are 255,000 Insta posts with the hashtag #petpig and I’ve probably looked at all of them.
Then there’s the 286,000 posts hashtagged #micropig and I’d hazard a guess that
I’ve seen all of those too.
So I’m rather excited to discover that there’s a pig farm less than an hour from central London, where I can find out what it’s
really like to have a porcine pet.
While celebrities might get away with turning up to photoshoots, TV appearances and fancy restaurants with all manner of furry creatures,
will I get the same reception if I take a pig for a stroll down the high street?
Samantha Rea from London strolling down the high street in Old Amersham with Astrid, a 16 month old micro pig
The pair stopped off at The Griffin, a private members club, bistro
and bakery, for some refreshments after a trot down the high street
Samantha Rea spent time at the Kew Little Pig Farm in Amersham, Buckinghamshire to learn how to muck out and care for pigs
Learning how to feed hay to the pigs did make Samantha question whether
it’s easier to stick with a dog or cat as a pet
I’m hoping the Kew Little Pigs Farm will help me find out.
It specialises in miniature pigs, which pig lovers can buy or ‘adopt’ to visit on the farm.
Then there are the day trips. The Piggy Pet & Play package lets visitors ‘pet, brush,
groom, watch and play with the pigs.’ The Pig Enthusiast package can include putting sun cream on the
pigs, and the Comprehensive Guide to Pig Keeping teaches you everything you need to know before buying your own micro pig.
Clearly I must go there!
And so I head to Amersham, in Buckinghamshire, where
Kew Little Pigs Farm is based.
When I arrive, owner Olivia Mikhail looks slightly concerned at the sight of my Converse trainers and cropped jeans, a combination that will
surely result in splattered shins.
However, Olivia has no idea just how prepared I actually
am, because I have packed not only knee high wellies for my time on the farm,
but also my designer heels, for my glimpse into what life’s like as a pig-owning celebrity.
Arnold Schwarzenegger with Schnelly the pig, who joined his
menagerie of pets in April last year
Ariane Grande and Pete Davidson adopted Piggy Smallz during their short-lived
romance in 2018
Comedian John Bishop was left devastated when his rescue pig Milo passed away last
year, describing him as the ‘heartbeat’ of the family
Paris Hilton started the chihuahuas in handbags craze,
and is also the proud owner of Princess Piglette
George Clooney, Paris Hilton, Miley Cyrus, Jonathan Ross,
Charlotte Church and even the Beckhams have all kept pigs as pets
over the past decade or so, while more recently Ariane Grande and Pete Davidson adopted Piggy Smallz during their short-lived romance.
Comedian John Bishop gave rescue pig Milo a home for more than a decade
and was devastated when the pet passed away, saying he was the ‘heartbeat’ of the family.
They’re as much a celeb accessory as oversized sunglasses
– which is why I’ve brought those with me too.
But first things first. Before I spend an afternoon taking
a petite pig for a stroll, I sit down with Olivia in the Kew Little Pigs cafe, to complete the theory side of the
Comprehensive Guide to Pig Keeping.
It turns out there is quite a lot of admin involved in owning a pig,
alongside a rule book thicker than Harry Potter.
Who knew that you needed a license to walk a pig? Who would imagine that you can’t feed pigs your kitchen leftovers?
It used to be common practice, but has been banned because of the risk of diseases such as African swine flu and foot and mouth disease that can be spread by consuming contaminated pork
products.
Who can fathom having to fill out a form to drive
your pig from one place to another – again for disease control reasons?
After all the admin and mucking out, Samantha was delighted
to move on to the fun part – cuddles with Astrid
Samantha found that mucking out the pig pen was actually a
lot more civilised than picking up poo on a dog walk
Samantha came armed with wellies for her day at the farm, but made sure to keep
it glamorous
After swapping her flimsy trainers for wellies, Samantha felt equipped to tackle her day on the farm
And who would guess that pigs have to have their own house?
I mean, it’s only got to be about the size of shed, but it’s actually a
law to uphold welfare standards.
I suppose none of this is an issue for celebrities who have people
to do paperwork for them – not to mention acres of
space – but to me it seems insurmountable.
Olivia senses that my dreams are crushed and attempts
to reassure me: ‘It’s really not that much paperwork.
Look, filling in this form would take two minutes.’
Moving on from the theory, we head outside for the practical
part of the course. Here, in large pens, are lots of little pigs
which are super cute, so this makes me happy.
I am given a rake to claw the pig poo into a dustpan. Both the rake and the dustpan have long handles and I like the
distance this creates. It is certainly more civilised than picking up poo in a flimsy plastic bag on a dog walk.
Clearing away pig excrement with proper equipment which allows you to maintain a civilised,
and sanitary, distance makes me wonder if – despite the
paperwork – pigs might just trump dogs.
Samantha was worried she might attract stares walking Astrid through town, but nobody batted an eyelid
Samantha treated herself to a hot chocolate while Astrid enjoyed some pig treats
Samantha swapped her wellington boots for high heels to glam up to take her pet pig down to the town centre
for lunch
Taking a pig out for a walk is trickier than it looks, and a lot of treats are required to keep things on track
Next, Olivia asks if I would like to feed the pigs. Yes of course!
She hands me some hay that’s stuffed inside what’s basically a large fishnet
stocking, the size of Santa’s sack. The hay sticks out of all the holes, and it’s
my job to hang up the sack in the pig pen, so the pigs can eat from it.
This sounds easy. Only it’s not. ‘NOT THERE!
NO! IT’S GOT TO BE HIGHER! TIE IT ROUND THE POST!
NO! NOT LIKE THAT! NO!’
I feel like a failing contestant on The Crystal Maze, only this is worse
because I’m now surrounded by hungry pigs and I cannot see a panic button.
I swear there was something on Netflix where murdered bodies were dumped in a
pig pen, to be eaten by the pigs. Or maybe the bodies were eaten alive.
This definitely happens all the time, according to TV,
and now I don’t even know which is worse, the prospect of
being felled by pigs eating through my ankles,
or the pressure to hang the hay correctly.
It is like my challenge on The Crystal Maze has been especially devised to amuse the inhabitants
of hell.
I find myself grateful to make it out of the pig pen alive.
Surely I get to do celebrity stuff now?
Celebrities’ pigs are as stylish as their owners, so I’ve sourced designer outfits for my trottered chums.
I’d initially looked at diamond chokers by Dior, because what pig
wouldn’t want a diamond collar? But apparently pigs
are happier in harnesses, which fit around
the body, not just the neck.
I hunt for a harness that an A-lister might pick for their pig,
and I am delighted to discover a pink leopard print harness with a matching lead.
It is by Urban Pup, a pet fashion brand whose website I’ve now spent more time on than all the other websites in my search history.
There’s the zebra print, the cheetah print, the pink argyle; the florals, the tartans, and
the hearts. There’s the range inspired by Legally Blonde and the pet carrier
that resembles a pink Chanel handbag.
Then there are the socks…
I turn up at the farm with more outfits for the pigs than I have for myself.
I guess this is what it’s like being a pig parent:
#SELFLESS
I am introduced to Astrid, a 16 month old micro piglet who’ll fulfill my dreams of walking a pig.
I show Olivia all the outfits I’ve brought from Urban Pup
and she picks out a pink tartan harness with a matching lead.
I want to dress up all the pigs but Olivia says no.
That’s OK. There is probably some law about only one pig at a time looking this stunning.
When Astrid and I are dressed, we head into Old Amersham.
It’s a pretty market town in the Chilterns with cobbled streets and quaint white buildings with beams.
So how will locals feel about a pig on a lead?
I imagine I may be sternly spoken to by a member of the Women’s Institute.
However, it turns out that Old Amersham is perfectly au fait with celebrity antics, given that Poirot, Midsomer
Murders and Four Weddings and a Funeral have all been filmed there.
On my pig keeping course I have learnt that pigs never poo where they eat, sleep or socialise,
because they’re very clean, so from day one, without any training, a
pig will go outside to poo.
I am surprised then, as I arrive in Old Amersham,
to find that Astrid has done her business in her carry box.
I try not to think about this, as I hold her lead.
Our first stop is the Amersham Museum. I’m not a massive fan of walking around looking at things,
but I hear the museum homes a Tudor dining table that visitors are welcome to sit at.
It is about lunchtime, so I’m hopeful I’ll be served a
Tudor banquet. I quite fancy a tankard of wine and a
bit of wild boar.
Unfortunately, Astrid does not, and so, despite being
welcomed by museum director Briony, we leave pretty
much as soon as we arrive.
We go for a stroll instead, but I have to scatter pig
food pellets to coax Astrid along the pavement. I guess celebrities get their assistants to walk
ahead, trailing treats to entice the pet pigs in the right
direction.
Hard at work: Writer Samantha Rea tried the Comprehensive
Guide to Pig Keeping, which teaches you everything you need to know
before buying your own micro pig
However, doing it without an assistant, I find myself thinking that it’s definitely easier to walk
a dog.
Celebrity life is about lounging in luxurious surroundings, so Astrid
and I head to The Griffin, a private members club,
bistro and bakery, that’s pretty much the Soho House of
Amersham.
In the beamed building that dates back to the 17th century,
there are gorgeous leather sofas and cosy cushions. However, I have learnt on my pig keeping course that pigs are happiest alfresco, so Astrid and I take a seat on the astro-turf terrace, beneath
a pretty parasol that wouldn’t be out of place in a Cotswolds shoot for Tatler.
It is here, as we relax like A-listers, that Astrid and I are at
our happiest. As I sip a coffee and eye-up a chocolate brownie (I’m being a
celebrity, remember, I don’t actually eat these things), Astrid puts her trotters up on the seat
beside me and enjoys a few pig food pellets.
Clearly this is our natural environment, so it’s probably just a matter of time before Astrid is snapped up
by a celebrity to live life first class.
But for now, Astrid must mooch back to the mud, and I
must head home to wash pig poo off my wellies.
I am chuffed to bits to have spent an afternoon with Astrid,
but as I think it all over, on the train back to Marylebone,
I know that I’ll never keep a pig as a pet.
Aside from all the legal red tape, my lack of space in London, and the trickiness
of trying to take a pig for a walk, there’s always the fear
that the micro pig might turn out to be not so tiny after all.
I’ve seen headlines about 4 ounce «teacup» pigs growing bigger than a bear, and frankly I find it terrifying.
So I’ll leave the pet pigs to the celebrities.
