Los avances médicos cada vez son más prometedores y las nuevas tecnologías utilizadas por los expertos alrededor del mundo podrían llegar a salvar la vida de millones de personas. Recientemente, un equipo de médicos de Nueva York realizó de forma exitosa el primer trasplante de riñón como parte de una investigación. Con la esperanza de que los órganos animales puedan llegar a ser la respuesta a la falta de órganos alrededor del planeta, la semana pasada se realizó la primera cirugía en donde el paciente David Bennett recibió un corazón de cerdo y días después no ha mostrado signos de rechazo.
Con 57 años, el paciente estadounidense David Bennett se convirtió en la primera persona en el mundo en recibir un trasplante de corazón de un cerdo. La cirugía fue realizada por los médicos de la Facultad de la Universidad de Maryland y según se informó el corazón del animal tuvo que ser modificado genéticamente para no ser rechazado por el cuerpo humano. Bennett ya se encuentra en recuperación después de la cirugía y hasta el momento, cinco días después de la operación, se encuentra bien. Este proceso médico demostró que un corazón animal modificado genéticamente puede funcionar sin rechazo inmediato por parte del cuerpo humano. De acuerdo con la información proporcionada por el sitio oficial de la Universidad de Maryland, David está siendo monitoreado cuidadosamente y durante las próximas semanas se podrá determinar si este tipo de trasplantes pueda llegar a salvar vidas.
Próximas semanas o meses serán cruciales
Expertos en Francia y Reino Unido advierten que aún debe demostrar su validez a largo plazo.

«Es una primera etapa, pero probablemente las próximas semanas o los próximos meses serán cruciales para darnos perspectivas», indicó Kerbaul.
El corazón del cerdo fue elegido porque presenta similitudes con el de los humanos, ¿pero podrá funcionar en el organismo de un ser bípedo, cuya movilidad es muy superior al del cerdo de cuatro patas?
«Lo que contará será el medio y largo plazo», resumió el cirujano cardiaco británico Francis Wells, en declaraciones recogidas por Science Media Center.
