LUXEMBOURG, Oct 7 (Reuters) – Germany’s economic model is not broken but Europe’s biggest economy has lost competitiveness over the past
decade, German Finance Minister Christian Lindner said on Monday.

«We can’t be satisfied with the economic developments in Germany,»
he told journalists ahead of a Eurogroup meeting.

The German economy is expected to contract by 0.2% in 2024, an economy ministry spokesperson said on Monday, cutting the
forecast from a previous projection of 0.3%
growth this year.

If realised, this would be the second consecutive year of contraction for Germany’s economy,
which was the weakest among its large euro zone peers last year with a 0.3% decline in gross domestic product.

Lindner said the government was introducing supply-side
measures to try to return the economy to growth.

«After these reforms, Germany will have more competitiveness again,» Lindner said, adding that
the growth initiative was just a first step for an economic turnaround, «but we have to build on it.»

AMBITION NEEDED

Lindner said «ambition» was needed to keep EU public finances
in order, or to put them back in order where necessary.

«I can only encourage everyone to implement structural reforms and to make unpopular decisions,» Lindner said.
«What seems to be unpopular at the moment is the willingness to take responsibility for the next generation and for the stability of the European Union as a whole.»

Lindner said he could not comment on the French budget plans
because he had not had the chance to talk with his French colleagues yet, but he would do so on Monday evening.

«We should all realise that the credibility of public finances vis-à-vis the capital markets is not to be trifled with,»
Lindner said.

«We must credibly reduce our deficits and our debt so that we can continue to finance ourselves well and in a stable manner.»

Nick Knowles revealed a major health update in regards
to his future on Strictly Come Dancing on Wednesday
after pulling out of last week’s live show due to an injury.

The DIY SOS star, 62 – who is paired with pro Luba Mushtuk – missed out on last
Saturday’s Movie Week due to a shoulder problem, before falling and injuring
his knee during rehearsals.

It’s yet to be decided whether Nick will be returning to the dance floor this week and the TV presenter has admitted that the decision still hangs in the balance. 

He shared an update with fans both on his Instagram
account and during an appearance on It Takes Two alongside Luba.

In the Instagram video, he told fans: ‘So I’m behind the scenes at It Takes Two and
the good news today is that the physios have cleared
me to train tomorrow.

Nick Knowles revealed a major health update in regards to his future on Strictly Come Dancing
on Wednesday after pulling out of last week’s
live show due to an injury

He shared the update with fans both on his Instagram
account and during an appearance on It Takes Two alongside Luba

‘That’s not an all clear for Saturday yet.
I have to see how I get on tomorrow and then a decision will be made
on Friday.

‘So, obviously we’ll update you as we go along. But I just wanted to take
this moment to say thank you for all the well wishes that I’ve received and encouragement from everybody.  And
I’m hopeful that I will be dancing on Saturday.’ 

Then, being interviewed by Janette Manrara during the BBC dance competition’s spin-off show It Takes Two, Nick
went into detail about what happened on Friday.

He explained: ‘We’d had a great week learning the dance and we were doing the camera tech rehearsals where the cameras
get to see how the dance works and everything.

‘Very last step of the dance I was late getting to where I should and leapt to the position and my one leg stayed still
and the rest of me went through.

‘Had a bit of a collapse and realised it wasn’t in a good position. I hurt
my knee basically.’

On the bright side, he added: ‘Each day gets a little bit better.  On Friday, it looked pretty
bad to be honest. Saturday was not so good but I got a scan and so
we decided to wait until Monday so we could have a look at that.

‘Monday was a little bit stronger and today I got the
see the physios and I’ve had help from all the rehab and physio’s and doctors and they have given me clearance to try and dance tomorrow to train.

Lady Gaga in ‘shock’ at poor reaction to Joker 2 as her team scramble to distract from the flop

The film is likely to be a hot contender during the upcoming awards season, having recived a 98-percent rating from both critics and moviegoers on Rotten Tomatoes. 

It earned $13.45 million over the weekend. So far, the
film has pulled in more than $83.7 million domestically and
more than $64 million internationally for a global take of $148.45 million.  

Landing in third place was Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga in Joker: Folie à Deux.
After winning the box office competition during its debut weekend could not overcome the bad
reviews, enduring an 82-percent decline in ticket sales.

The movie collected only $7.055 million, in spite of being
in more than four thousand theaters across the
US.

audiences who turned some $7.05 million to catch
the quirky supernatural struggle between the ghastly ghoul and the Deetz family.

Debuting at number five is the Pharrell Williams biopic Piece by Piece.
The animated story of Williams’ rise from poverty to becoming one of the
most beloved musical stars in the world is told with Lego characters.

Artists Gwen Stefani, Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, Jay-Z and more appear as
Lego characters in Williams’ musical journey.  The movie was a hit with fans who helped it
earn $3.8 million even though it was shown in less than 2,000 theaters.

With Halloween quickly approaching, Terrifier 3 slashed its way to the top of the heap.

The movie about a deadly clown named Art, determined
to literally kill the Christmas holiday spirit in a small town, earned $18.3 million at the box office

 The Wild Robot, starring Lupita Nyong’o as the voice of the title character,  held on to second place earning  $13.45
million over the weekend

Joker: Folie à Deux, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga fell to third place its second week in theaters earning only $7.055 million, in spite of being in more than four
thousand theaters across the US

Transformers One put on the brakes in sixth place over the weekend.
The animated adventure starring the voices of Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson and Bryan Tyree Henry crossed the finish line
with $3.65 million.

Saturday Night, the story behind the groundbreaking late night
show Saturday Night Live, made its way into the top 10,
landing at number seven after three weeks of limited release in theaters, earning some $3.4 million.

The historic dramady was directed and co-written by Jason Reitman and focuses on the frenzied efforts to
wrangle a rag-tag bunch of comic actors in order to get the very
first episode on the air, while creator Lorne Michaels is
contending with immense pressure from NBC network executives.

as they lead efforts to ace off against Dark Might
and the obscure crime organisation under his control, the
Gollini Family.

The re-release of Disney’s The Nightmare Before Christmas brought some holiday cheer to audiences who made their
way to theaters to watch the beloved tale. 

The project co-written and directed by Tim Burton found $2.3 million under the Christmas tree. 

The Apprentice, starring Sebastian Stan as a young Donald Trump and Jeremy Strong as his mentor Roy Cohn, debuted
in 10th place in limited release with a take home of $1.58 million. 

The film looks at how Trump became a real estate mogul in New York City well before he ever considered jumping into politics.  Critics gave it a 77-percent on Rotten Tomatoes, but audiences were
more enthusiastic, giving in an 86-percent approval rating.
