Ucrania se unirá a la candidatura de España y Portugal para albergar la Copa Mundial de fútbol en 2030.
Una persona al tanto de los planes informó el martes a The Associated Press que Ucrania se sum a la candidatura ibérica. El anuncio será formalizado el miércoles en la sede de la UEFA en Nyon, Suiza. España y Portugal llevan más de tres años trabajando en su candidatura conjunta.
La persona pidió no ser identificada debido a que el anunció no ha sido a dado conocer públicamente.
El presidente de la federación ucraniana de fútbol, Andriy Pavelko, confirmó a la AP que viajará Suiza para el anuncio pero declinó revelar detalles sobre el proyecto.
El diario británico The Times de Londres fue el primer medio en informar que Ucrania se unirá a la candidatura de España y Portugal.
Ucrania fue cosede del Campeonato Europeo de 2012 en cuatro ciudades, incluyendo Donetsk y Járkov. Esas ciudades fueron ocupadas o bombardeadas desde que Rusia invadió el país a inicios de año.
La candidatura europea enfrentará a una de cuatro países de Sudamérica. Uruguay, Argentina, Chile y Paraguay oficializaron en agosto un candidatura conjunta.
La FIFA contempla que 2024 sea el año para definir el anfitrión en 2030. Qatar organiza la cita de 2022, mientras que Estados Unidos, Canadá y México montarán el torneo de 2026.
