El Ministerio de Ambiente de Ecuador informó que estudios genéticos realizados por científicos de la universidad de Yale confirmaron que la tortuga gigante hallada hace más de dos años en la isla Fernandina pertenece a una especie que se creía extinta hace más de un siglo.

En un comunicado aseguró que los análisis realizados compararon muestras de ese reptil, una hembra adulta de más de 100 años, con los de un individuo extraído del archipiélago de Galápagos en 1906, lo que determinó que pertenece a la especie Chelonoidis phantasticus.

El ministro de Ambiente, Gustavo Manrique, citado en el documento, destacó que “la esperanza sigue intacta y Ecuador, una vez más, ratifica la razón por la que es uno de los países más megadiversos del mundo, una razón más para que los turistas nos elijan como su principal destino natural”, mientras que el director del Parque Nacional Galápagos dijo que el descubrimiento “renueva nuestra esperanza de recuperación de esta especie”.

La tortuga fue hallada en una expedición científica en febrero de 2019 a la isla Fernandina, deshabitada por humanos.

“Uno de los mayores misterios de Galápagos ha sido la tortuga gigante de la isla Fernandina. El redescubrimiento de esta especie perdida puede haber ocurrido justo a tiempo para salvarla. Ahora necesitamos con urgencia completar la búsqueda para encontrar otras tortugas”, afirmó James Gibbs, vicepresidente de Ciencia y Conservación de Galapagos Conservancy y experto en tortugas de la Universidad Estatal de Nueva York.

En Galápagos, donde hay una población de unas 60.000 gigantes, hay 13 islas principales y al menos 17 islotes en medio de océano Pacífico, a 1.000 kilómetros del territorio continental ecuatoriano. El archipiélago de origen volcánico acoge especies únicas en el mundo y endémicas, en especial tortugas gigantes, iguanas marinas, pingüinos, cormoranes no voladores y leones marinos.

Galápagos fue declarado Patrimonio Natural de la Humanidad en 1979 en reconocimiento por sus especies únicas, animales y vegetales, terrestres y marinas que sirvieron de base para que el científico inglés Charles Darwin desarrollara su teoría de la evolución de las especies.
