Venezuela acusa a Guyana de tergiversar la disputa territorial ante la ONU

El Gobierno venezolano acusó este viernes a Guyana de tergiversar y manipular la información sobre la disputa territorial histórica de 160.000 kilómetros cuadrados al oeste del río Esequibo, en el 77 periodo de sesiones de la Asamblea General de Naciones Unidas (ONU).

«Son inaceptables las persistentes y falsas imputaciones que Guyana ha venido profiriendo desde 2015 ante la Asamblea General de la ONU, año que coincide con el momento en que las trasnacionales petroleras resuelven invadir las aguas sin delimitar», indicó la Cancillería venezolana en un comunicado.

En la Asamblea General de la ONU, celebrada entre el 19 y 26 de septiembre, el presidente de Guyana, Mohamed Irfaan Ali, señaló que la soberanía territorial de su país ha sido puesta en «tela de juicio por Venezuela».

Agregó que Guyana seguirá defendiendo los procesos pacíficos de resolución de conflictos y se «negará a cualquier esfuerzo de apartarse de los mismos».

«La Corte Internacional de Justicia (CIJ) ya ha reafirmado su jurisdicción en la cuestión», apostilló.

Para el Ejecutivo venezolano, ese discurso irrespeta la «posición histórica y justa» del país caribeño sobre la controversia fronteriza, regida «por el Acuerdo de Ginebra suscrito entre el Reino Unido, Venezuela y Guyana, cuya motivación es alcanzar una negociación amistosa sobre el inconmensurable territorio terrestre tropical conformado por 160.000 kilómetros».

«Venezuela expresa su indignación al constatar cómo se le miente al mundo, cuando ha sido por décadas el mejor socio en cooperación, solidaridad e integración», señaló.

En marzo de 2018, Guyana interpuso una demanda contra Venezuela ante el juez de la Haya para resolver la disputa territorial entre ambos Estados sobre la región de Esequibo.

Cuatro años después, en marzo de 2022, el Gobierno guyanés presentó ante la CIJ -tribunal que en diciembre de 2020 se declaró competente para decidir sobre dicha disputa- sus argumentos para dar validez al laudo arbitral de 1899, que concluyó con una sentencia que le otorgó el territorio a la entonces Guayana Británica, decisión que Caracas no reconoce.

En junio pasado, el Gobierno venezolano presentó sus objeciones preliminares ante la CIJ como una forma de procurar que la demanda «no sea admitida por carecer de elementos esenciales para conformar un debido proceso», según informó el Ministerio de Exteriores.

Venezuela reclama alrededor del 70% del territorio de Guyana, la región de Esequibo, incluidas las reservas de petróleo en alta mar, argumentando que el acuerdo de 1899 es nulo y sin efecto debido a que «afectó fraudulentamente 159.500 kilómetros cuadrados del territorio» de la Guayana Esequiba, como la llama el Gobierno chavista.
